The concert features two dynamic student ensembles—the UWL Jazz Messengers and the UWL Jazz Collective—performing an engaging mix of jazz standards, blues, bebop, and modern grooves. Under the direction of faculty coach Jon Ailabouni, the combos highlight the creativity and improvisational artistry that are hallmarks of UWL’s jazz program. The Jazz Messengers open the evening with a set that includes beloved classics such as On the Sunny Side of the Street, John Coltrane’s Equinox, Erroll Garner’s Misty, and Eddie Harris’s funk-infused Listen Here. The ensemble features Maddie Seiler (voice), Lucas Jandt (trumpet), Annette Cortez (tenor saxophone), Gair Dillie (baritone saxophone), Sam Baudek (guitar), Noah Hronis (piano), Sean Fernan (bass), and Magnus Davidson (drums). Following this, the Jazz Collective brings its own high-energy program with works by Lillian Hardin Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Weldon Irvine, performing Struttin’ With Some Barbecue, A Night in Tunisia, Oleo, and Mr. Clean. The group includes Neil Clyne (trumpet), Obi Chavolla (tenor saxophone), Tommy Vote (guitar), Pablo Beisser (piano), Svend Luke (bass), and Jacob Sabir (drums).
